By using renewable sources to meet its energy needs, the EU would reduce its dependence on hydrocarbons, reducing exposure to commodity price fluctuations and geopolitical pressures, while generating clean energy from its own sources.
To this end the EU has set a commitment target of 20% in final client energy consumption from renewable sources by 2020. To this end, each EU country has committed itself to achieving its own national clean renewable energy , ranging from 10% to 49% in Sweden, 23% in France and 26% in Italy.
Renewable energies will continue to play an important role in the EU after 2020, as member countries have already agreed to target at least 27% of final energy consumption from renewables by 2030.
